Title: Rough Road (Lake Lovelace #2) Author: Vanessa North Main Characters: Eddie Russell & Wish Carter Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 185 pages Publisher: Riptide Publishing Date of Publication: September 28th 2015 Story: Eddie Russell is many things: A wealthy pillar of the community. An outrageous flirt. A doting best friend. A masochist with a kink for brawling with his bedmates. But he is definitely not a man who invites intimacy. His friends are close but few, his lovers rarer still. When Eddie runs his Mercedes off the road on a hot July afternoon, Wish Carver comes to his aid—and leaves his number in Eddie’s phone. Wish, a road crew worker half Eddie’s age and sexy as sin, seems fascinated by Eddie’s different sides. Mutual attraction and compatible kinks ignite the sheets, but it’s their connection outside the bedroom that Eddie begins to crave. When the two come down on opposite sides of a local issue, Eddie finds his growing feelings for Wish at odds with his business interests and his devotion to his best friend, local wakeboarding legend Ben Warren. Torn between old loyalties and his new love, Eddie is reluctant to make a choice. But he knows he can’t make Wish wait too long to make up his mind. Review: We all remember Eddie, right? He’s the overly protective, speedo wearing, pain loving bestfriend of Ben back in the first story. From the moment he was introduced we knew instantly that he would be one of those sub characters that can effortlessly stand alone. He had that personality that was unique and entertaining that would catch any reader’s eye. So bless Ms. Vanessa North for creating a story evolving around him and his journey to finding his happily ever after. Right off the bat, Eddie ran his S-Class Benz off road, spinning until it stopped. With the airbag deployed, his head in a daze, pain radiating from everywhere, Eddie was sorta out of it when hands appeared and started patting his head to check for injuries. And of course, Eddie being who he was, the moment he saw with guy with the bluest eyes and a hard hat on his head, he automatically declared that he was in heaven. Which he also said out loud with no embarrassment whatsoever. Wish didn’t mind though as he helped Eddie out of the car to further inspect him. Rather, he was intrigued and fascinated by Eddie’s complete lack of word filter. All worry he had about the guy who just literally got out of a mild accident vanished when he saw Eddie mindlessly flirt at him. And who was he to not flirt back? I swear, I have never squealed that quickly throughout reading a book. The first chapter was already enough for me to get hooked. The obvious attraction was heavily present in their first meeting and it just multiplied a hundreds more when they got to meet again and again. With Wish being 20 years younger than Eddie, Eddie’s conscious was taking over his brain and declaring that what they had was simply a hook up because, what would a gorgeous young twenty four year old want to do with the forty four year old him? No matter how perfect they were with each other, how aligned their kinks were, how high Eddie was flying when Wish took over control, how much Wish inflicted the kind of pain Eddie thrived for, Eddie was prepared to let it all go because they were just too different. Good thing, Wish wasn’t. Despite the fact that there were elements wherein they were too different, Wish didn’t mind them at all. He wasn’t looking for a daddy, he was looking for a man to be his equal. At the beginning there was the obvious push and pull in their relationship but as the story continued on their relationship progressed into something closer to permanent. It wasn’t easy getting there, it took a lot of drama and unfortunate events to lead them to the end. But it was all worth it seeing how the two passed through their problems one by one. It was satisfying to read a couple talking about their problems with each other rather than putting it off. Plus the whole putting Ben first plot was brilliantly done. I could totally understand the pain that Eddie felt when he had to let that go. It was something that needed to be done and the part where Eddie realized that, it was just heart breaking to read. As you can see, this book tackled everything a normal relationship would have, the sweetness, the angst and even the kink and it was all perfectly executed. Especially since I like reading kink mixed with romance, like, a lot, so this was definitely a big win for me. But damn, this book was too short. I needed more Eddie and Wish moments and character building! I wanted to physically read about Wish not running from a big fight and read about Eddie putting Wish first. I mean, we got promises at the end that they’ll change for each other, I just wished we really got to see them do it. Oh well, I’ll just let my imagination run wild. And if ever we’ll get a book 3, I hope I can see more of Eddie and Wish there too. I’m will definitely look forward to more Vanessa North in the future. /thumbs up/ Favorite Lines: “Horn dog.” [Eddie to Wish] “Pervert.” [Wish to Eddie] Clearly, a match made in heaven. |
