Title: The Guy From Glamour (The Guy #1) Main Characters: Anthony Carrino & Dean Pierce Author: Skylar M. Cates Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 246 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: January 9th 2014 Story: Anthony Carrino loves his big, gregarious Italian-American family, even if his sisters are interfering, and his dad, the local sheriff, knows everything going on in town. He’s happy as a middle school guidance counselor. Despite helping kids and their parents fix their problems, Anthony can’t manage to get his own love life right. If only everyone would stop calling him the “nice” guy. Dean Pierce doesn’t do relationships. A tough-minded military man, he is dedicated to his job as a Night Stalker, flying Chinook helicopters and not speaking much to anybody. He certainly doesn’t want to deal with a mess of emotions. But when tragedy strikes, Dean finds his hands full with his troubled niece, her irresistible guidance counselor, and a meddlesome family, which includes a rather large puppy. Me and this book: Truth be told, there are only a few gems in contemporary romance department that really get to me. Usually when I read books with these kind of themes, I always just skim through some part of it especially if I find the story boring from the start. But sometimes, roughly in about five books, one or two of them would really stand out to me and this book was that special one. FINALLY. Review: Being a proud member of the Night Stalkers, Dean was prepared for all kinds of worsts but what he wasn’t prepared for was the sudden news of the death of his sister and the teenage niece that she had left behind. Dean never wanted this, from the beginning he was already dreading the idea of going back home, facing the memories he wanted to forget in the army and the troubled teenage niece that he had to take care of. Good thing he met Anthony to help him along the way. At least that was what he thought until suddenly Anthony climbed up the list of things to worry about. Anthony was the guidance counselor at the school were Dean’s niece studies. Even with just that job description, everyone has been calling Anthony the ‘Nice guy’. And he was. Together with his whole crazy, loud, Italian family, they took in the liberty of housing in little Nicki for the time being. So with that, he and Dean together somehow created a plan on how Dean would be able to warm his way into Nicki’s broken heart. That was just the gist of the storyline but this book included more story than what it seemed. There were a lot of moments in the book that will keep the readers reading until the end. The drama were scattered throughout the book, jumping from how Nicki will react to Dean to how the seeming relationship of Dean and Anthony would develop. Dean was hard at first, being the military guy that was suddenly pulled out from the service, it was rather heartwarming to see him struggling to find the right words and do the right things. Anthony was patient thought, being a guidance counselor he has knowledge on what to do in these types of situations. That was what Anthony was to Dean at first, his lifeline when it regards to what to do for Nicki. The story will further more halfway where Dean and Anthony figure out for themselves just what the hell they were doing. The growing attraction between them were slow around the beginning but it was the good kind and whenever it did happen the much awaited love can be felt a mile away. It was amazing to see how the two complimented each other, Dean showed Anthony what it was like to take risks and Anthony showed Dean what it was like to settle down and be part of the family. Proving that once again, opposites do attract. The emotions portrayed in the chapters were also mind blowing, especially during the scenes that involved Nicki. Love the fact that the author didn’t left her behind in the story, there was actually a whole chapter with just her and Dean bonding with each other. I must also praise the way this story flow was edited, it was done in a way that will always keep the readers interested on what happens next. There were a lot of scenes that where stretched out to further the story but it wasn’t dragging the story down, it was rather pulling it up. Those secondary characters were lovely to read about and not annoying at all unless you’re not fond of two middle aged twins bickering with each other. They made the story much more evolving with their own problems and it wasn’t over powering at all. In the end, this was one of the best small town themed books that I loved. It wasn’t tedious at all despite having the setting in just one small place. This book was sweet, powerful, emotional, pure and life changing all wrapped in one. Expect me to read more from this series /and from this author/ and I hope the next in the series does not disappoint me. |
