Title: Murder And Mayhem (Murder And Mayhem #1) Author: Rhys Ford Main Characters: Rook Stevens & Dante Montoya Genre: Romance & Crime Length: 236 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press LLC Date of Publication: June 5th 2015 Story: Dead women tell no tales. Former cat burglar Rook Stevens stole many a priceless thing in the past, but he’s never been accused of taking a life—until now. It was one thing to find a former associate inside Potter’s Field, his pop culture memorabilia shop, but quite another to stumble across her dead body. Detective Dante Montoya thought he’d never see Rook Stevens again—not after his former partner’d falsified evidence to entrap the jewelry thief and Stevens walked off scot-free. So when he tackled a fleeing murder suspect, Dante was shocked to discover the blood-covered man was none other than the thief he’d fought to put in prison and who still made his blood sing. Rook is determined to shake loose the murder charge against him, even if it means putting distance between him and the rugged Cuban-Mexican detective who brought him down. If one dead con artist wasn’t bad enough, others soon follow, and as the bodies pile up around Rook’s feet, he’s forced to reach out to the last man he’d expect to believe in his innocence—and the only man who’s ever gotten under Rook’s skin. Me and this book: Honestly, I haven’t read a good enough crime centered MM book in a while. Like, for real. That’s why I was super excited to get my hands on this one and also seeing all the positive reviews that this one has, I was already dying to read it. However I read it during my first week of classes so I wasn’t able to get the feel right because I was shifting from school life to my reading life BUT nevertheless, it was the best thing to come home to after a rough day at school. Review: A burglar and a detective who have a slight history between them. Just that would bring the readers in that’s for sure. Rook Stevens was a thief, a burglar. He can take anything from anyone with his swift skills, everything but their lives. So when he was caught in the middle of a murder in his own residence, Rook couldn’t even believe it. Call him whatever but he’s not a murderer. However, it was as if faith has planned it all, the detective on his case was the one who wants nothing more but to put him behind bars. Detective Dante Montoya has had a brief history with Rook as Rook slipped from his fingers during a case regarding theft years ago. And when he found out that it was Rook who was taken in for a murder charge, he wanted the one to close the case. But like everything else it wasn’t that simple. Not when Rook looks like he’s from Dante’s dreams and to think that they had a little sexual encounter a few years back, this case was proving to be harder to crack. Despite wanting Rook behind bars, Dante couldn’t stray from his passion for solving crime, he knew something wasn’t right and whether Rook was innocent or not, he must do the right thing. The suspense and mystery that this story provided was such a surprise. It was well done, to think that readers would also get confused and intrigued at all the things that was happening. From the beginning, the readers knew that Rook was innocent with the scene starting with Rook literally stumbling at the soon to be crime scene. It was fast paced yet worked enough for the readers to digest what was happening. There was never a dull moment in the plot, every chapter delivered a strong input on that murder aspect of the story. The sexual tension in this book was palpable. Both MCs were very into each other but fighting the urge because of obvious reasons. Their interactions confirmed that there’s heat between them and once that wall of heat broke, they just couldn’t get their hands off each other. It was amazing. The readers would see how these two evolved from the beginning, from being enemies to lovers. Their personalities really fit with each other and they can be rather sweet especially on Dante’s part. Plus, their dialogues with each other were golden. All in all, this was a great story. The writing and editing were spot on. The flow of the story was very fluid and not confusing at all. Secondary characters were a joy to read and weren’t in the way of the romance building between the two main characters. Both Rook and Dante were lovable even though they both have their own ups and downs in life. It’s just, how this story all came together at the end was simple and not over the top. It was done just right and I cannot wait to read more about these two in the future. |
