Title: Keep Swimming (Keep Swimming #1) Main Characters: Cary Whitmore & Heath Cummings Author: Kade Boehme Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 130 pages Publisher: Kade Boehme Date of Publication: June 26th 2014 Story: After his partner dumped him with a pregnant surrogate four years ago, Cary Whitmore was forced to play single parent while starting up a new business. With the dog bakery now semi-successful and his son healthy, Cary thinks he may be ready to date again. Heath Cummings is trying his damnedest to get his charter boat service off the ground and dreams of one day soon being able to quit his job as an offshore driller. Paying off his dream requires making it through a couple more years, which means being open about his sexuality isn't in the cards just yet. When the two take their flirting to the next level, Cary wonders if he can handle another guy who might take off, while Heath has to decide if he can risk his dream of a laid back life—and giving up his long-held and much enjoyed bachelor status while taking on a child when being a father was never on his to-do list. Will they sink, or will they keep swimming? Me and this book: It took me a long time to read this because I never really did liked the Trouble And The Wallflower by the same author. But I should know better than to judge an author by just one book. So sorry, Kade. At least I finished this one with a smile on my face. Review: This was a simple story about two people who gradually fell for one another and of course it wasn’t all perfect, what relationship is, right? This started off with a prologue from both of the MCs. Cary being left by his partner of four years with a surrogate who’s pregnant and Heath doing his damn hardest to keep his dream of running a charter boat service. Both had different views and priorities in life. And it was faith’s job to draw them together. A few years later both MCs found themselves volunteering at a no-kill animal shelter run by their mutual friend. Well, we know where that leads, right? Moving on, I consider this book somehow a light and easy read. The MCs already liked each other from the start so straight off the bat, the feelings moved on directly to sexual tension between the two. Which I think was a little too fast for my taste but it was hot so all was forgiven. Their relationship took time and with Heath being bisexual and ‘in the closet’, the readers knew there were going to be lots of trouble ahead. Good thing Cary was the patient type and he respected Heath’s decision but there’s a limit to what a man can take. And the scenes that pushed Cary to the limit were dramatic and eventful. But I do think the ending scene was sweet and full of love. I liked it. Gus was adorable, it was refreshing to read about a kid that’s not over the top. I mean, Gus was the quiet shy type of kid that every parent secretly wants. But I don’t find the connection between Gus and Heath that realistic, Gus liked Heath way too fast, that’s all. Writing was a little wonky, the Kent/Kyle names where confusing, I had to backtrack at times to remind myself who was who. There were also a lot of typos and missing words that was really distracting and killed a moment or two. But other than that, this was a good light read that everyone should give a chance to read. People who love reading MM books with kids in them will love this, not much angst for some but just right for others. |
