Title: Life Lessons Main Characters: Anthony “Tony” Hart and Jared “Mac” Maclean Author: Kaje Harper Genre: Crime, Suspense and Romance Length: 276 pages Publisher: MLR Press Date of Publication: May 3rd 2011 Story: Tony Hart's life has been quiet lately. He has good friends and a rewarding teaching job. Then the murdered body of another teacher falls into the elevator at his feet, and Tony's life gets a little too exciting. Jared MacLean is a homicide detective, a widowed father, and deeply in the closet. But from the moment he meets Tony's blue eyes in that high school hallway, Mac can't help wanting this man in his life. However Mac isn't the only one with his eyes on Tony. As the murderer tries to cover his tracks, Mac has to work fast or lose Tony, permanently. Me and this book: I don’t even know why I kept pushing back on reading this book. Maybe it was because of the cover? But I should know better than to judge a book by its cover especially with gay books. Anyways, I now regret that completely. I ended up reading this book during my 3 day seminar and I gotta say, I finished it before the seminar ended. I just couldn’t keep this book down, you know. When I got home I’d drink coffee so that I’ll be able to study but I always ended up reading this instead. I don’t regret it though, it’s really good. By far the best book I’ve read in a long time. Its characters were just so real, I couldn’t help but get emotionally attached to them. Plus, this was my first book from Kaje Harper, I was excited to meet her. Review: This book will immediately introduce you to Tony Hart, the openly gay teacher who’s not your typical harlequin character, he’s actually very professional and has a great personality which you’d appreciate as you read along. While Mac here, he’s introduced as someone who’s serious at his job as a homicide detective, living everyday as a deep closeted gay. And that’s where they’d meet. Tony just happened to stay up late at school grading papers which left him to somewhat ‘witness’ the murder of his fellow teacher and Mac here was part of the team that will investigate it. Lucky enough though, he was assigned to take care and interrogate our Tony Hart. I will not go into detail on what happened ‘cause that’s the readers job and it’s better that way too. The suspense and the thrill of figuring out who the killer was before more bad things happen will leave you reading and reading. From the beginning, we could definitely see the connection between these two even though they, themselves, don’t know that yet. And it was fun reading how they finally did. This book may not have those explosives and big over the top car chase scene but it will leave you feeling the same, excited and in character. This is a little more realistic compared to other crime books that I’ve read and that’s something to look forward to, I can promise you that. The book will give you a chance to experience and understand the story behind the two characters as to why they are who they are. Slowly, you’d be engraved with the two characters that before you knew it, you’d reach the end with just one sitting. |
