Title: My Prince Author: Anna Martin Main Characters: George & Alex Genre: Romance Length: 220 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: October 9th 2015 Story: After growing up in a rough part of town, George Maguire worked his way out of Manchester and to a career as a design engineer. Alexander van Amsberg, an architecture student at the University of Edinburgh, wasn’t the sort of guy he normally had explosive, hotel-room one-night-stands with. Alex was charming, classy, and, as George later learns, Prince of the Netherlands. Fate brings them together again, and Alex makes sure to get his sexy stranger’s phone number this time. Despite all the reasons why they shouldn’t work, something clicks, and Alex thinks that this time, he might have found the right guy. But Alex’s aristocratic ex stirs up trouble in the press for George and his humble family, and Alex realizes he has to get real about having a boyfriend from the wrong side of town. While George acknowledges his modest upbringing, he doesn’t let anyone insult his family. Life’s no fairy tale, and regardless of his royal title, Alex might destroy his one chance for happily ever after. Review: This was such a lovely story about two people falling in love despite being on different sides of society. George Maguire came from a middle class family together with his one older brother and five younger sisters. He worked hard on getting his career started until he ended up being a design engineer for sports helmets. Despite reaching that far, he never once turned his back on his family. Most of his savings goes to his family back in Manchester while he lives in a rundown apartment shared with a couple of roommates. Alexander van Amsberg has a different story. His was more for the history books, with him being related to the king and queen of Netherlands. Though he’s not next to the throne, his life has been under the microscope as well especially being the only royal who’s openly gay. Escaping that part of his life for a bit, Alex came to Edinburgh to study architecture. Being royalty was not what it always seemed to be, Alex longs to find someone who won’t use him, his title and his family. He just wanted someone to love him for him. A night of pleasure brought Alex and George together. Despite not knowing more than each other’s first names on that first night, both of them couldn’t stop thinking about the other. Months had passed before they met again under circumstances, with George aware who Alex was it proved a little difficult for them to see how their relationship would grow. Nevertheless, they wanted to give their love a shot. This book was simply amazing in a way how the author had managed to make the simplest things in life so meaningful that multiple times I found myself with a grin on my face. The way it was written was flowy and uncomplicated and it was just perfect for the setting the story was in. This was the kind of book I’d definitely reread just to feel that giddy feeling again. Especially the part how George managed to let the people close to him know his sexuality was flawless, it was fun and sweet and I hope everyone who comes out will have that kind of experience too. Let me also include how the secondary characters made the story more precious and real. Doug, Alex’s bestfriend, was one of my favorite secondary characters ever. I mean come on, the way he initiated George was priceless. I hope he has his own story sometime in the future. Plus, both Alex and George’s family were nice and open. No angst about them whatsoever. It was all just real. No backstabbing family members, no drama. Though this book was populated by sweet and tender moments, there were still things that came in between them, one even resulting to Alex walking out. However, reading how both of them longed for the other despite the temporary setback was the cherry on top. The regret and conflict were there and I loved it. I love it when a character regrets what they have done to the point where they leave themselves vulnerable to the pain. But the real winner of the story was how the romance between Alex and George grew. From dates in nearby restaurants to parties at the castle, they always had time for sweet moments such as kissing, holding hands and even cuddling. They longed for those moments which made me long for them too. They never changed the way they were to each other, they were as sweet as they were the on their first date. Oh and the sex was pretty hot too. That scene where Alex had George clinging on the bathroom sink while he did that thing he did was way beyond hot. I absolutely encourage EVERYONE to read this. This is the perfect book to read in bed all day. Which I did by the way. Favorite Line: “I tried not wanting you,” George murmured. “It didn’t work.” |
