Title: No Place Left To Run Author: Zarah Detand Main Characters: Samuel Gibbs & Ryan Halston Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 210 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: March 25th 2015 Story: After a lengthy world tour, pop star Samuel Gibbs is looking forward to a nice, quiet break—sleep in, write a bit of music, do his own cooking for a change. He doesn't want his time spoiled by the constant presence of bodyguards, and he is certainly not willing to have someone tail him each time he so much as goes to the shops. No way, no how. It's a good thing, then, that his head of security relents on the matter—or so he leads Samuel to believe. The break is starting to look even better when Samuel runs into his new neighbor. Ryan Halston is smart and hot and, quite possibly, everything Samuel wants. However, he doesn't know that Ryan is part of the rejected security detail, tasked with protecting him from the dangerous attentions of an unknown stalker. Me and this book: You know that plot will catch my eye. Coming from the world of fanfiction I have seen this plot done multiple times already. So I’m quite eager to see how different it is written in the real world, written by an actually book author. Can’t say I’m not excited because I really am. Damn this fanfiction heart of mine, it won’t let me go. Review: This was a simple story of a pop star, Sam, trying to get at least one thing he can control in his paparazzi driven life, his much waited break. He wanted nothing more than to spend his entire break from his exhausting but fulfilling career in his own place, alone, with no bodyguards surrounding him twenty four seven. Though it’s an easy task to do, Sam had to plead tooth and nail to get it happen. And Gary, Sam’s head of security, seeing the sincerity in Sam’s word, agreed. He agreed to give Sam his bodyguard free break, at least that’s what Sam assumed. Unknown to Sam, Gary has been busy figuring out who this alleged fan of Sam’s who leveled up into an obsessive, potentially dangerous stalker was. Leaving notes for Sam in places no one was supposed to know unless they were with Sam personally, was reason enough for Gary to come up with a solution in order to protect Sam even if Sam wasn’t aware of it all. And true enough, Ryan was the solution he needed. Needing someone Sam doesn’t recognize as a bodyguard, Ryan’s job was simple, protect Sam from the sidelines without the pop star knowing. With this, Sam would get the peace and ‘guard-free’ break he wanted while being protected at the same time. Being an expert in his profession, Ryan was willing to play undercover to the pop star, it was only a job for him anyway, just get the job done and he’ll be on his way to the next one. He never intended to get along with Sam let alone feel things he haven’t felt in a long time. But of course, it wasn’t all that easy. This story flowed after all the touring and concerting so don’t expect to read about band performances and such. This centered mostly on the life of the pop star after all the glam. The setting here settled into a slow pace as the readers were acquainted with how Sam feels and experiences his day to day life on his break. The backstory of the obsessed fan wasn’t much focused on at the beginning, just little bits here and there which I think was good since it gave more time for the readers to focus on Sam and Ryan’s building relationship. And that relationship also started in a slow pace. Don’t expect lots of heavy angst here only light ones that were mostly about the past of each MCs. Just be ready for lots of frustration as you go through the push and pull of both characters which was sometimes a little unnecessary. But other than that I think the book really kicked off at the second half where Sam found out that Ryan was his undercover bodyguard (you know that’s the part everyone’s been waiting for). Of course, it wasn’t pretty. As expected, Sam acted betrayed as hell. Very expected from this kind of plot anyway. Over all this was a good enough book. Good enough to read over a cup of tea outside on the patio. If you’re a fan of this kind of plot then by all means go read this. It might be a little clichés-ish for seasoned readers but for newbies it’s just the right blend. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this.. but it was only okay-ish for me. |
