Title: One Small Thing Main Characters: Rue Murray & Erik Van Nuys Authors: Piper Vaughn & M.J. O’Shea Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 214 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: May 4th 2012 Story: "Daddy" is not a title Rue Murray wanted, but he never thought he'd have sex with a woman either. Now he's the unwitting father of a newborn named Alice. Between bartending and cosmetology school, Rue doesn't have time for babies, but he can't give her up. What Rue needs is a babysitter, and he's running out of options. He's on the verge of quitting school to watch Alice himself when he remembers his reclusive new neighbor, Erik. Erik Van Nuys is a sci-fi novelist with anxiety issues to spare. He doesn't like people in general, and he likes babies even less. Still, with his royalties dwindling, he could use the extra cash. Reluctantly, he takes on the role of manny-and even more reluctantly, he finds himself falling for Alice and her flamboyant father. Rue and Erik are as different as two people can be, and Alice is the unlikeliest of babies, but Rue has never been happier than when Alice and Erik are by his side. At least, not until he receives an offer that puts all his dreams within reach and he's forced to choose: the future he's always wanted, or the family he thought he never did. Me and this book: I’m not lying, reading a book about two gay guys with one child always takes my heart. There’s just something about the way on finding out how the character manages to make it through the day, like being homosexual wasn’t hard enough in this society and add a child to that? That’s going to be heavy and tough. I like that and this book was definitely a catch, it’s very unique and I like that in my books because sometimes the weirder the story is, the more I like it. Review: This story revolves around the lives of Rue, Erik and little baby Alice. Now Rue here is definitely flamboyantly gay and he’s not afraid to show it. The only thing different about Rue is that, he has a little baby girl, Alice. And he loves her unconditionally. Who wouldn’t? Now here’s the thing, Rue studies cosmetology and works as a bartender, which proves that he cannot give more time and attention to baby Alice. He was rather contemplating on quitting school but there’s this job that was waiting for him after he graduates. That’s his dream job and he can’t let that go. This job would help big time on taking care of Alice in the future that’s why he’s making all efforts to find a suitable nanny to Alice until his classes end. This is where Erik comes in. Erik lives across the hall from Rue and he’s definitely not a people person, he’d rather stay at home all day than go outside and socialize. He’s basically the total opposite of our flamboyant Rue but still somehow they manage to get along. Rue needed someone to take care of baby Alice throughout the day and with Erik as a writer, he takes the job as the ‘manny’ to get at least a few cash since he stays at home all day anyway. This is such a lovely read. It’s sweet, tender and has this slow pace that’s perfect for the story. There are going to be ups and downs but it’s part of what makes it effortlessly perfect. Readers would get to see how Rue works hard every single day while thinking about Alice in everything he does and readers would also get to experience how Erik here goes from a quiet guy to falling hopelessly in love with Rue in the end. This is such a wonderful read and it is a perfect blend for those readers who are into reading about life in general and how to overcome obstacles. |
