Title: Clockwork Heart (Clockwork Love #1) Author: Heidi Cullinan Main Characters: Cornelius Stevens & Johann Berger Genre: Romance, Alternate history & Steampunk Length: 248 pages Publisher: Samhain Publishing Date of Publication: February 2nd 2016 Story: Love, adventure and a steaming good time. As the French army leader’s bastard son, Cornelius Stevens enjoys a great deal of latitude. But when he saves an enemy soldier using clockwork parts, he’s well aware he risks hanging for treason. That doesn’t worry him half as much, however, as the realization he’s falling for his patient. Johann Berger never expected to survive his regiment’s suicide attack on Calais, much less wake up with mechanical parts. To avoid discovery, he’s forced to hide in plain sight as Cornelius’s lover—a role Johann finds himself taking to surprisingly well. When a threat is made on Cornelius’s life, Johann learns the secret of the device implanted in his chest—a mythical weapon both warring countries would kill to obtain. Caught up in a political frenzy, in league with pirates, dodging rogue spies, mobsters and princesses with deadly parasols, Cornelius and Johann have no time to contemplate how they ended up in this mess. All they know is, the only way out is together—or not at all. Review: Cornelius Stevens is a tinker-surgeon. He’s creative, intelligent and has a personality to back it up. Being the bastard son of one of the most influential man in the ongoing war, life hasn’t been easy on Conny who wanted nothing more than to stop this foolish war. He’s a tinker, he builds people’s lives back one piece at a time and he takes pride in his work. Seeing his clockwork miracles do wonders for the lives of those he helps makes up for the fact that he has a ruthless father helping in the war that only creates more problems and sorrows. So when he stumbled upon a stack of enemy bodies, his helper instinct kicked in when he saw one of the bodies still somehow alive and struggling to keep it that way. And that one moving body belonged to Johann Berger. As Conny continues to save his life by replacing all his broken parks with clockwork, Johann didn’t even mind. It took a little while to get used to being half clockwork parts, but Johann was truly thankful for his savior and he was practically smitten over him too. However, Conny couldn’t hide Johann in his room forever, they were bound to get noticed. So with no other option, Johann pretended to be Conny’s male lover for the time being, not that he minded anyway. And with the war going on, Conny’s spy mom up to something, Conny’s bestfriend Valentin wanting in on the secret and certain countries looking for a device that could make them a powerful threat, Johann and Conny were definitely bound to get into immediate trouble. This had got to be one of the most steampunk-ish books that I actually enjoyed reading. This had everything that I love, the adventure, the steamy romance, the action, the unknown, everything. That’s why this would definitely be included in my favorites shelve. The story telling and world building was nicely done, it wasn’t too complicate yet it wasn’t too simple, just right. Johann and Conny’s story begun slow, with both of them speaking a different language, it was expected. However, how they evolved from being just that to actual lovers was worth the read. The romance was quite satisfying, even with the kinky parts, Cullinan managed to write it still in line with the story. Brilliant. The action and the fast paced story was actually a huge reason why I couldn’t stop reading this book. It had a wide variety of events going from one thing to the other, from hot kinky sex to action packed fight scenes. Plus, sub characters keep popping up along the way yet it wasn’t disruptive at all rather it added depth to the complex story. It didn’t lose the focus on our two main characters which I appreciated a lot. Comradery and secrets played a huge part in the story so I suggest to get yourselves pumped up in reading this. This will take you for a ride in an ongoing war set in a steampunk world. You’d fall for the wise talkative tinker and his clockwork masterpiece. Favorite Line: Stole my heart. In every way possible. |
