Title: Him Author: Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy Main Characters: Jamie Canning & Ryan Wesley Genre: Romance & Sports (Hockey) Length: 276 pages Publisher: Self Published Date of Publication: July 28th 2015 Story: They don’t play for the same team. Or do they? Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died. Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship. Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever. Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it? When Wesley turns up to coach alongside Jamie for one more hot summer at camp, Jamie has a few things to discover about his old friend...and a big one to learn about himself. Me and this book: Not going to lie, I usually avoid ‘friends/bffs to lovers’ and ‘sport themed’ MM books. So Imagine my reaction when I saw this book with countless positive reviews just to find out that it’s exactly what I avoid. I didn’t know what do to next. Should I read it or not? But then I thought, what the heck, let’s just try. So I did. I got the book and read it. Read it in one sitting and absolutely loved it. Review: Jamie Canning and Ryan Wesley were best of friends. They both loved hockey, with Jamie playing as a goalie while Ryan as a forward. Despite going to different schools, they attended that same hockey summer camp every summer for at least six weeks. Actually, that was where they met, rivals at first then bestfriends the second. Being hyperactive teenage boys, they were both putting themselves in shenanigans and what not, the usual stuff bestfriends do. However, on their last summer camp together, things got a little different which cost Ryan to abruptly remove Jamie from his life, leaving Jamie behind wondering what the hell went wrong. Four years had passed since then and they never got back to contacting one another. Until, yet again a game of hockey somehow brought them to each other’s proximity. That’s where they realized that in avoiding what had happened before, they acted just the same as if the four years of silence didn’t happen. They still knew each other’s kirks and actions and secretly longed for it. Though it lasted only for a day, Ryan felt enough proof that their friendship was still salvageable. So finding out that Jamie works as a coach at their old hockey summer camp, Ryan pushed himself to sign up as well, with thoughts of finally apologizing to his bestfriend in his head. And that’s how it started. Told in both of their point of views, it was easy to identify how both of them was feeling, It was predominant that both missed and longed for each other’s friendship but there were also lingering questions and doubt in their heads if they could manage to fix whatever it is that’s broken between them. Emotions run wild for both of them, particularly to Jamie who didn’t knew exactly as to why Ryan cut him off, he spent years thinking that he was the one who did something wrong. Good thing though that Ryan was up for the challenge of making it up for him. The romance was minimal at the beginning but once you got passed the middle, it was there all the way. You could see how both of them changed when they finally got over their feelings and emotions. Their interactions and dialogue behind closed doors or in this case their shared room were both hot and sweet beyond the max. That mattress scene killed me, guys, one of my favorite scenes in the book. Not forgetting the steamy scenes too they were very intimate and very hot despite it being normal explorative sex (no bdsm/kink involved). This has slight level of angst but plenty of romance. The kisses here and there were to die for. Plus, this book never became awkward at all because the two characters built their love from their friendship which just solidified their relationship even further. Though despite that needed drama before the end, it was wonderfully wrapped up and sorted. And I liked the fact that their relationship literally took time and effort from the both of them, like a real couple should. Also liked the fact that this story didn’t end at the summer camp, I loved how it went beyond that and centered on both of their lives after college though it was a small portion. It made the happily ever after ending more believable and real. |
