Title: Loving Jay Main Characters: Liam Turner & James “Jay” Bell Author: Renae Kaye Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 200 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: April 18th 2014 Story: One thing Liam Turner knows for sure is that he's not gay—after all, his father makes it very clear he’ll allow no son of his to be gay. And Liam believes it, until a chance meeting with James “Jay” Bell turns Liam’s world upside-down. Jay is vivacious and unabashedly gay—from the tips of his bleached hair to the ends of his polished nails. With a flair for fashion, overreaction, and an inability to cork his verbal diarrhea, Liam believes drama queen Jay must have a screw loose. An accident as a teenager left Liam with a limp and a fear of driving. He can’t play football anymore either, and that makes him feel like less of a man. But that’s no reason to question his sexuality... unless the accident broke something else inside him. When being with Jay causes Liam’s protective instincts to emerge, Liam starts to believe all he knew in life had been a convenient excuse to stay hidden. From intolerance to confrontations, Liam must learn to overcome his fears—and his father—before he can accept his sexuality and truly love Jay. Me and this book: This was what I was expecting when I entered the world of gay books and I was so excited about that, then imagine my reaction when I saw that they were actually only a few books like this. Don’t get me wrong, I love heavy angst or action filled gay books too but this, this was like a breath of fresh air for me after reading consecutive hard core books. It’s like a tone down for me, a book to bring me back to the surface of sweet gay love. Update: This is the first book in my Renae Kaye book marathon. Expect reviews on The Shearing Gun and Safe In His Arms in a few days/weeks. Review: This started off awesome and ended awesome. It begins with Liam basically telling/reminding himself that no matter what feels about this flamboyant, sparkly eyeliner wearing, bleached blond hair guy, he is not gay. Not. Gay. Seriously, every freaking paragraph has that phrase. It’s wasn’t annoying though, it was actually comical since it was in Liam’s own mind. His mind always runs into overtime in every little detail concerning his sexuality that no matter how much he denied it, it was plain obvious for the readers. Since this was made purely in Liam’s point of view, the reader’s image of who Jay was, was completely magnified by Liam. Liam hasn’t even talked to Jay once in the beginning much less know anything about the guy, he only knew bits and pieces while trying to not stare at the guy during their morning train ride to work. And what perfect opportunity for them to meet than for both of them to miss their morning train. With Jay taking the initiative, Liam finally had a reason to talk to him. They hit it off immediately, of course with Jay talking twenty miles an hour for the both of them. Liam didn’t really mind though, he loved watching Jay lose himself in his self-diagnosed ‘verbal diarrhea’ and if you ask me, Liam takes pleasure in bringing Jay back to earth. That was all good for days, they even had a system of buying coffee for each and owing one another a meal or two which was sweet and warm to read. In the meantime Liam kept denying in his own little head what was undeniable and he was losing pretty badly in that battle. I mean come on, who can resist the irresistible Jay? Jay was like the gay bestfriend everyone /me/ wants to have. Jay was a character who’s able to stand on its own, he didn’t need any climatic scenes for the readers to love him, he would just be himself and the readers would fall for him, I know I did. Jay was gay and that was plain obvious if the nail polish, eccentric clothing, colored hair, slim body, weren’t enough to make you notice then maybe there’s something wrong with you. But that wasn’t all that there was in Jay. When Liam finally got to look closer into who Jay really was, that’s when he realized that not only Jay was nice and all, he was everything he wanted. Naturally, Liam became protective of Jay and when something happened to Jay, Liam didn’t think twice to help him. This was definitely a light read, something readers can enjoy to pass the time. And make no mistake, it was brilliantly done. Scenes were well balance, though there were some scenes that were off the pages wherein I’d rather read them stretched out in a chapter or so especially when Liam and Jay started hitting it off well. But other than that it was good enough for a light read. It was funny and fresh, and Jay really had a big impact on why I can’t put this book down. Even I wanted to protect Jay from time to time in some pages. He’s just so sweet, caring and bubbly, he really was a star. Scenes with secondary characters were also done in a funny and witty way that it wasn’t overpowering at all. Liam’s interactions with both his and Jay’s family was really entertaining, especially that part with Jay’s sister. In the end, I agree with some people that this needed a glorious epilogue where we get to see Liam and Jay’s relationship take the next step. Surely we can convince /beg/ the author for more, right? No? Okay. |
