Title: Rattlesnake Author: Kim Fielding Main Characters: Jimmy Dorsett & Shane Little Genre: Contemporary Romance Length: 240 Pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: August 31, 2015 Story: A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn’t seen in years. On a quest to deliver the letter, Jimmy travels to Rattlesnake, a small town nestled in the foothills of the California Sierras. The centerpiece of the town is the Rattlesnake Inn, where the bartender is handsome former cowboy Shane Little. Sparks fly, and when Jimmy’s car gives up the ghost, Shane gets him a job as handyman at the inn. Both within the community of Rattlesnake and in Shane’s arms, Jimmy finds an unaccustomed peace. But it can’t be a lasting thing. The open road continues to call, and surely Shane—a strong, proud man with a painful past and a difficult present—deserves better than a lying vagabond who can’t stay put for long. Me and this book: This was one of my most anticipated book to date. Everyone was talking about this book in high praises before it was even released. How cool was that? To be an author and have readers from around the world anticipating your book? Amazing. Review: Jimmy was what people call a drifter. He would move from town to town, driving aimlessly unto the next road not even looking back on where he just came from. That has been his life ever since he was a teenager, coming from a broken family, it was his way of moving on. And this time through an unfortunate event, he found himself in a little town called Rattlesnake with a mission at hand, deliver the letter from the old man to his son, Shane. He thought it was simple, just find the guy and move on to the next town but there was something about Rattlesnake that kept him from leaving and from doing what he intended to do. Shane wasn’t the usual bartender, no he was damaged and broken just like anybody else. With a constant limp that give him pain and the seizures that come and go, Shane was definitely not perfect, neither was Jimmy. Together, they found a rhythm in each other that they didn’t even realize was there. Yes, they started with the physical attraction but when they finally got to spend time together, work together and heck even just being with each other, they found a natural flow that worked for both of them. It should have been uncomfortable to be with someone they don’t know yet with these two, it was as easy as breathing. The story took time, every day was it elaborated and we could see the tension and conflicts that went through Jimmy’s head. He was drifter by nature so the feeling of contentment and permanence was new to him and it made him uneasy, afraid even. He should have left, he kept telling himself but he didn’t. Getting to spend time and time again with Shane pushed that thought back on the list he needed to do. Without even realizing it, slowly he was starting to feel right at home in the arm of Shane. Brilliant, that was one way to describe this story. Starting from the first chapter up to the end, every emotion the story portrayed were true and real. Seeing both characters evolve into something better through time was definitely worth reading though it wasn’t easy. Both went through a lot of hurt and pain but the beauty in this was in reading on how they both went out of their way to comfort and help each other. How the author managed to tackle such an intense plot like this was beyond what I had expected, it definitely blew me away. Bottom line was that I loved this story. The emotions and dynamics between both main characters were so real and raw, the hurt and pain were there and it was radiating from the book and ripping my heart. It has been a long time since a book moved me like this, making me cry with its simple words. It was such a wonderful experience. It was a mixture of touching moments and life changing scenarios that kept me reading from the very beginning to the end. Very believable and realistic from every vantage point. This truly was an amazingly written book. |
