Title: The Coil Main Characters: Mattie Green & Simon Castle, and sweet little Jamie <3 Author: L.A. Gilbert Genre: Contemporary Romance, Slight Angst ;) Length: 286 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: October 10th 2012 Story: Sandwich-maker Mattie Green has one goal: escape San Diego, move to New York, and attend art school. But to make this a reality, he needs to get his GED—not easy, since he can’t read or write. Until he can, he’s stuck working at the diner and selling himself on the side. Mattie’s legitimate job isn’t without perks. Every day the quiet, sophisticated Simon Castle comes by to work on his latest book. Mattie wants more than to pour Simon’s coffee and make his lunch, but he’s sure Simon is out of his league—until suddenly he’s not. Simon Castle's life is complicated, built around his career and a son who requires a lot of time and attention. It’s not a life well-suited to the inclusion of even a part-time prostitute, so he resolves to keep his relationship with Mattie casual. However, the longer he knows Mattie, the deeper his feelings become. The idea of him with another man tortures Simon, but he can't ask Mattie to be his alone and jeopardize Mattie's hopes for New York—no matter how much he wants Mattie to stay. Me and this book: This was my second book read from said author. The first read was the book The Ghost On My Couch which I think made this author popular amongst readers. The first book was so cute and so sweet but this book was different. It was more mature than the first but that didn’t mean it wasn’t as awesome. In my opinion, this book was much better than the first by a mile. I wasn’t expecting much at that time because usually when I read, I read books by author. I just thought, “Why not? Let’s read this too.” And good thing that I did because this book was a life changer. I never expected to be sucked into the world of Simon. I love Mattie but Simon took my heart in the end. Him and his little Jamie. Ever since reading this I never could get this story out of my head, I’d always remember Simon and how he lived his life. It became a part of me and it taught me a few things as well. Review: Let me tell you something about Simon first. He has had a rough life. He used to have a boyfriend and they were happy and everything. That stopped when Simon’s sister died and left her newborn with him to take care off. Simon was reluctant but he had to. And what’s worse was that the kid, Jamie, was diagnosed as autistic. Simon tried to make it work somehow, with work and social life but his partner couldn’t handle the situation and left. Add to that, Simon’s mother wanted to legally claim Jamie because she believes that it’s not right for a same sex couple to raise a child. So what did Simon do? He cut off his ties with his mother and took care of little Jamie on his own as he worked as a writer. He knows Jamie and how to handle him when he has his moments and it was both heartwarming and heartbreaking to read. But you could definitely see how Simon loves Jamie and how he considers him as his own child. Sometimes there were hard days, sometimes it was easy but Simon wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Now let us talk about Mattie. Mattie is a little different, he’s illiterate but shows promising talent in arts. He’s inspired and wants to get his GED to make something happen in his life and he’s willing to work hard for that. In fact, he works different jobs at the same time, one as a waiter at where Simon spends his day writing and another as a rent boy. He didn't love that work and he wasn't proud of it but he needed the money to survive every day. Sometimes desperate people do desperate things, right? This two will meet along the way, and the author has given us the privilege of knowing what’s in their heads by the dual point of view. The readers will understand the decisions and the hardships both characters went through and will go through. Like every other relationship, it will always start good but it’s not always rainbows and sunshine, it’ll get difficult along the way. Everything else will get complicated really fast and if you’re a reader who loves that then I recommend this book to you immediately. Together with Jamie’s autistic moments, Mattie’s rent boy job, Simon’s insecurities and add to it with Simon’s mom trying to get back in the picture, these will all spiral into a whirlpool of problems. But I assure you this book has a HEA, you’ll just have to go through all the problems and face them one page at a time. It’s going to be a long read, but it’ll be worth it. Every chapter will leave you wanting more so don’t miss out on this. This book might even teach you a thing or two about life in general. |
