Title: The Lightning-Struck Heart Author: T.J. Klune Main Characters: Sam Havensford & Ryan Foxheart Genre: Romance & Fantasy (pretty much a bit of everything) Length: 400 pages Publisher: Dreamspinner Press Date of Publication: July 20th 2015 Story: Once upon a time, in an alleyway in the slums of the City of Lockes, a young and somewhat lonely boy named Sam Haversford turns a group of teenage douchebags into stone completely by accident. Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam's pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King's Wizard, Morgan of Shadows. When Sam is fourteen, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds. At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle. Sir Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed. Naturally, it all goes to hell through the years when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can't control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan's boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have. Me and this book: Note to self: Never expect anything less from T.J. Klune because he ALWAYS delivers. Review: As the story goes, Sam has been living in the slums when he was a kid and with the accidental release of his magic, he was sent straight to the castle to apprentice under the King’s Wizard. And not only was he good at his magic, he was also good with his words. Sometimes a little too good. He grew up in the castle grounds and together with his bestfriends, a hornless gay unicorn and a sweet half giant, Sam goes about his day doing apprentice things and whatnots causing the much needed havoc in the castle. It was all good until Prince Justin was taken away by a sexually aggressive dragon. Yup, you heard it right. So with that, Sam with his friends and the additional Knight Commander Ryan, who Sam secretly longs for and of course was fated to marry the Prince, they were sent by the King to rescue the beloved Prince and bring him back safely. How’s that for an adventure of a lifetime? If you’re familiar with the author’s work then you know what’s going to happen to you when you read this. This will make you laugh out loud. The plot and events were outrageous and lively, topped that with witty and sassy dialogue, you’ve got yourself a T.J. Klune experience. This book had so much sass too. I mean, literally every character showed sass and it was awesome. Plus, you’ll fall in love with Sam from the get go. Told in his point of view, you’ll see him as this sweet, smart mouth, stupid idiot that you’ll pin for every step of the way. Seriously, everything about this story was epic, from the sassy dialogue to the overly exaggerated scenes. Plus, the characters! Oh gosh, how I loved every single one of the characters, even the evil ones. Their addition to the story was such a perfect fit that no matter how exaggerated it was, it fit wonderfully with the storyline. They were just so lovable and they will never fail to remind you how much you love them on every page. Despite the obvious fun atmosphere from the story, this also tackled the hard hitting emotions. The amount of pining from Sam in this story was so heartbreaking that I was so close to tearing up every time that I would be reminded that Ryan was something he would never have. His dreams and wishes were continuously fulfilled and shattered at the same time that you wouldn’t know what to feel anymore, if you’ll be happy or sad. Over all this was a clearly well written book. You can see the amount of effort the author took to put the pieces of the story together from the beginning to the end. Though this book was longer than the usual book length, the story was enough to keep the interest of the reader. I know because I certainly did and I read this in the span of days because of school. Do you know how frustrating that was to read then force myself to stop because I need to go to school? But anyways, to simply put it, this was a story about how Sam of Wilds was able to go through with his life being the Wizard’s apprentice. Just add a gay unicorn bestfriend, half giant bestfriend, a jealous prince, a very confused knight commander and a sexually aggressive dragon. If that’s not enough to reel you in, then I don’t know what is. I’m just happy in this bubble of fun and laughter, if you don’t want it then fine by me, I can have Sam all to myself. |
